Ukodhiko Sympathises with Ozoro Festival Victims, Applauds Swift Police Intervention
The Member representing Isoko North and Isoko South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Jonathan Ajirioghene Ukodhiko, has strongly condemned the reported harassment and assault of women during the Ozoro Festival, describing the incident as barbaric and unacceptable.
In a statement issued on Friday, the lawmaker expressed deep sympathy with the victims, noting that such acts have no place in any civilised society or cultural celebration.
He stressed that festivals, which are meant to promote unity, heritage, and communal harmony, must not be turned into avenues for criminality and abuse.
Ukodhiko said he was particularly disturbed by reports of violence and sexual assault allegedly carried out under the guise of festivity, adding that the dignity and safety of women must always be protected.
He commended the Nigeria Police Force for their swift response and efforts in tracking down those responsible for the heinous acts.
The federal lawmaker urged security agencies to ensure that all perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law to serve as a deterrent to others.
The lawmaker also commended the Delta State Government, Isoko North Local Government Council and other relevant authorities for promptly condemning what he described as a barbaric act, noting that their stance reinforces the collective resolve to uphold justice and protect citizens.
“The actions of these individuals are reprehensible and must be condemned by all. I empathise deeply with the victims and their families during this difficult time. I also commend the police for their prompt intervention and urge them to leave no stone unturned in bringing all those involved to justice,” he said.
Ukodhiko further called on community leaders, traditional institutions, and festival organisers to put in place stricter measures to guarantee the safety of participants in future events. He emphasised the need for collective vigilance and responsibility to prevent a recurrence.
He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the protection of human rights and the well-being of his constituents, urging residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.
